Learning Analytics in the era of Convergent Research

 Learning Analytics has grown rapidly as a field from a small group of interested scholars and practitioners to one of the most scientifically successful and institutionally accepted areas of Learning and Educational Technologies. Learning Analytics is often referred as a"Middle-Space" where experts from diverse fields share their perspectives on how to better understand and optimize learning processes and environments using instruments like crowdsourcing, social networking, shared blogs and platforms as well as collaborative and P2P tools. This speech provides information on how learning analytics can play important role in improving the services for the convergent research initiative.

About Dr. Jinan Fiaidhi

 Dr. Jinan Fiaidhi is a full Professor and the Graduate Coordinator with the Department of Computer Science, Lakehead University, Ontario, Canada since late 2001. She is also an Adjunct Research Professor with the University of Western Ontario. She received her graduate degrees in Computer Science from Essex University (PgD 1983) and Brunel University (PhD, 1986). During the period (1986-2001), Dr. Fiaidhi served at many academic positions (e.g. University of Technology (Assoc. Prof and Chairperson), Philadelphia University (Assoc. Prof), Applied Science University (Professor), Sultan Qaboos University (Assoc. Prof.). Dr. Fiaidhi research is focused on mobile, social networking and ubiquitous learning utilizing the emerging technologies (e.g. Crowedsourcing, Cloud Computing, Calm Computing, Learning Analytics, Mobile Learning, Personal Learning Environment, Social Networking, Enterprise Mashups, Big Data and Semantic Web). Dr. Fiaidhi research is supported by the major research granting associations in Canada (e.g. NSERC, CFI). Dr. Fiaidhi is a Professional Software Engineer of Ontario (PEng), Senior Member of IEEE, member of the British Computer Society (MBCS) and member of the Canadian Information Society (CIPS) holding the designate of ISP. Dr. Fiaidhi has intensive editorial experience (e.g. Editor-in-Chief International Journal of Extreme Connectivity and Automation in Healthcare (IJEACH), Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Software Engineering and Its Applications (IJSEIA, Department Editor with IEEE IT-Professional). Digital Health: The New Multidisciplinary Ecosystem Playground for Convergent Research

Recent trends in healthcare service delivery promote integrated and patient-centric care provided by multidisciplinary teams and multiple care delivery settings along the continuum of a disease. To place the patient at the center of care means also to focus on prevention and wellness, and to attend to the physical, mental and spiritual needs of the citizen. The existent healthcare systems are not suitable to meet these requests because they are oriented to acute disease care, emphasize short encounters of patients with their caregivers where the healthcare professionals are the main actors, favor diagnosis and treatment of current symptoms, and usually support the caregiver’s activity in solitude. Healthcare systems are still largely paper based, ignore information tools that can facilitate evidence-based best practices, and function without analytics to qualify and quantify the care they provide. Medical decisions are made according to implicit criteria embedded in the physician’s reasoning and knowledge rather than explicit criteria, that is external knowledge that can be checked, evaluated and updated. To face such a challenge as the shift of the health paradigm a systematic adoption of healthcare Information Technologies (IT) is considered a necessity, not only an opportunity. With the IT support management of chronic pathologies, home recovery, patient empowerment and coordination of clinical pathways with multiple actors are possible. IT adoption allows innovating or re-engineering healthcare sectors to promote the economic sustainability of healthcare services and improve their quality. Digital Health Revolution is the new IT multidisciplinary ecosystem focusing on the convergent scientific research, economic, ethical, societal, legal and political aspects of personal health data in order to increase individuals' health capability, and to develop new services and health data related business. Digital health is also the instrument that will transform healthcare to combat the unsustainable cost curve.


About Dr. Sabah Mohammed 

Dr. Sabah Mohammed research interest is in intelligent systems that have to operate in large, nondeterministic, cooperative, highly connected, survivable, adaptive or partially known domains. His continuous research is inspired by his PhD work back in 1981 from Brunel University (UK) on the employment of the Brain Activity Structures for decision making (planning and learning) that enable processes (e.g. agents, mobile objects) and collaborative processes to act intelligently in their environments to timely achieve the required goals. Having trained in medicine with a computer science PhD in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Dr. Mohammed is full Professor at the department of Computer Science at Lakehead University (Ontario Canada) since 2002 and core professor at the BioTechnology program at Lakehead. Dr. Mohammed efforts in establishing healthcare related programs at Lakehead are notable like the specialization Health informatics, BioTechnology and the Bioinformatics programs at Lakehead. With a research background in industry and academia, he has a strong international research reputation for his work on clinical decision support systems supporting rural, ubiquitous and extreme environments. Prior to his work at Lakehead University, Dr. Mohammed was the chair of three computer science departments at HCT, Philadelphia and Applied Science Universities. He is the founder and Editor-In-Chief of the Emerging Technology of Web Intelligence (JETWI) as well as the EiC of four other peer-reviewed Open Access journals including International Journal of Extreme Connectivity and Automation in Healthcare (IJEACH),  Int. J. of Artificial Intelligence and Applications for Smart Devices (IJAIASD), Int. J. of Big Data Security Intelligence (IJBDSI) and Int. J.of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Engineering (IJMUE). Dr. Mohammed is also an Associate Editor of the IEEE Access Journal. Dr. Mohammed is currently working on the development of IoT and mobility technologies that have impact on improving healthcare services at rural areas like Northwestern Ontario region for his Smart Health Laboratory. Dr. Mohammed is also a professional engineer with research supported by major granting organizations like NSERC and CFI.
